Hunting prairie dogs is not like hunting other types of game, it has few essential differences that stand out. For example, prairie dogs don’t even start moving good until the sun has been out for a while. This means that you get to sleep in. It is a great trip to take the whole family on and it is a blast for the little ones because you don’t have to be still or quiet. Nevertheless, it also teaches you how to shoot a rifle like nothing else will. It is nothing to shoot 500 rounds per person per day, and that is if you are shooting conservatively.

The burrows of these little digging rodents aerated and watered the deep soil and provided a home to many other species of animals too. Their feeding habits controlled invasive vegetation and opened the prairie to the plants preferred by buffalo and pronghorn antelope. The prairie dogs themselves were a source of food for many other animals like : hawks, rattlesnakes, badgers, coyotes, and let’s not forget black-footed ferrets.

Hunting is conducted on several large ranches. Hunters sit in shooting benches or in high rack hunting trucks. The hunting is fast paced and it requires lots of ammunition. The hunting season starts in May and ends in August. Practicing your hunting skills is available during off-season. Regarding the lodge, it has well over 6000 square feet, it also has 6 suites, each with their own bath, lots of porch space to enjoy the wide open spaces, and many modern comforts all in this rustic Western setting that surely will suit every taste!

Hunting is available throughout the whole year but its most effective during summertime. The ranch offers hunting on several thousand acres of prairie dog towns. Most towns are well over 200 acres and they offer more than 8 towns for hunting enthusiasts. They provide hotel pickup, shaded swivel benches, rests, bags, lunch, drinks, spotting and barrel coolers. The best time for hunting starts in April and ends in July. There is a 6 hunter limit per week in order to don’t get crowded and can’t enjoy hunting at its best. They have exclusivity to a 25 square mile West Texas ranch that has 11 square miles of dogs.

They offer executive hunts which consist in the following : its available for hunters which may choose to relax in the morning and have their guides lay out and pick up all decoys and rags necessary for their hunt. Executive Hunts may be used for all waterfowl hunts. Also, game storage is available for hunters staying several days : the local processor will freeze and keep your game until the end of your stay. There is a fee for storage charged by the processor.
